Would you rather drag an object or pull it on a cart?
When you have wheels underneath the object your are transporting, there are only a few points touching the ground (the wheels). Therefore, there is less friction created when you pull the object. When there is less friction, there is higher efficiency.
There are, of course, other ways it makes life easier, but that is one of the main ideas.
